The 19th Century Part III
In this quatrain Nostradamus predicts that when the eagle (Austria) and the cock (France) are united at Savona (Savoy in North Italy) There will be an army in the South of Italy (Garibaldi's forces) fighting against the Sea, (Pope), Levant (East) and Hungary. At this same time A bearded man (Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy) will cause a great out cry in both Rome and Venice.
Victor Emmanuel II Savoy
8-9 While the eagle and the
cock at Savona
Will be united, Sea, Levant and Hungary
The army at Naples, Palermo, March of Ancona
Rome, Venice, by the Beard will make a horrible outcry.
Pendant
que l'aigle & le coq à Savone
Seront unis Mer Levant & Ongrie,
L'armee à Naples, Palerne, Marque d'Ancone
Rome, Venise par BVarb horrible crie.
The
eagle and the cock of the first line are France and Austria, united in
Savona Italy, for the cause of restoring the Pope. On April 29, 1849 the
Pope asked the Catholic powers to re-establish the temporal power of the
Papacy. Spain, Austria, and King Ferdinand of Naples were all eager to
obey, but Napoleon III of France wavered. He was treading on a dangerous
course, since up until this time, he had tacitly supported Garibaldi’s
march on Rome.
But faced with pressure from his Catholic subjects, Napoleon made up his
mind, and on April 29, 1849, sent General Oudino into Italy to liberate
Rome. Garibaldi’s men made a brave defense, and drove the French out, but
only until June, when they returned, and this time were victorious.
In this same month, Austria was having troubles of her own, with her empire
in the East. Hungary, the other half of her duel empire, caught the infection
of the Italian nationalists, and they too, rose up to declare their independence
from Austria. War of course followed in April of 1849.
However, this did not stop the Austrians from invading Italy with their
forces, and on May 7, 1849 they took Ferrara, and then marched on Ancona.
In September of 1849, King Ferdinand earned the dubious title of King Bomba,
for the merciless bombardment and massacre of his own subjects on Sicily
(Palermo)
Meanwhile, the nationalists were still grimly hanging on to Venice, but
eventually under the combined forces of the French, Austrian, Spanish and
Papal forces, had to give in. The beard of the last line is King Victor
Emanuel of Savoy, who was the key leader in the fight for Italian freedom.
He was outraged at Napoleon III’s betrayal of the Italian cause.
Note that in the numbering of this quatrain 8-9, we are given two digits
of the year 1849, in which these incidents occurred.
In this quatrain Nostradamus predicts that when a great cow is (Turin Italy, city of the bull ( the Cow) (Garibaldi ) will find himself in big trouble in Ravenna, because he is going to the aid of 15 people under seige in Fornase. At this same time, Rome will be ruled by two double headed monsters (4 people with the same goals) The greatest ones (King and Queen of Naples and the Pope) will be nowhere to be seen.
9-3
The magna vaqua at Ravenna in great trouble
Led by fifteen shut up in Fornase
At Rome there will be born two double headed monsters
Blood, fire, flood, the greatest ones in space
La magna vaqua à Rauenne grand trouble,
Conduicts par quinze enserrez à Fornase:
A Rome naistra deux monstres à testes double
Sang, feu, deluge, les plus grands à l'espase.
Manin
Mazzini
It is almost possible to solve this quatrain using only the first line!
Magna
Vaqua in the original French means two things - firstly, it was
the name of a valley and a tiny port village between Ravenna and Ferrara
in Italy. This village was later renamed Porto di Garibaldi. In
this quatrain the prophet has given us the actual name of Garibaldi - although
it wasn't called Garibaldi until long long after the prophet wrote these
words. But since he could see into the future, he would have seen the name
change of the village of Magna Vacca as well!
The second meaning of the word magna vacca is
great
cow. Since Turin in Italy is named for the Bull, a great cow would
be one of her citizens, and a great one at that – here he is speaking of
Garibaldi.
Garibaldi and his little band of men fled from Rome on June 30 1849, driven
out by the French, who had come to restore the Pope. Garibaldi’s colleague
in the fight for nationalism was the President of Venice, Manin, who was
still stubbornly holding onto that city. It was in this direction that
Garibaldi and his men headed, planning to go to the aid of Venice. Fornase
is a small village about 10 miles West of Venice.
Garibaldi and his men did not make it. The Austrians caught up with them
at Magna Vaqua on August 3, 1849, and captured most of the little band,
although Garibaldi himself made it to safety.
The double headed monsters that Nostradamus sees at Rome were the members
of the newly formed Constitutional Assembly. Mazzini had become the chief
of the new Republic, and Armellini and Saffi assisted him. The greatest
ones who were in space at this time were the Pope himself, and the King
and Queen of Naples who had fled to exile in Gaeta.
9-54
There will arrive at Corisbonne
Near Ravenna, he who will pillage the lady
In the deep sea, the Legate from Lisbon
Hidden under a rock, will carry off seventy souls
Arriuera au port de Corsibonne,
Pres de Rauenne, qui pillera la dame:
En mer profonde legat de la Vlisbonne,
Sous roc cachez rauiront septante ames.
Corisbonne, otherwise known as Porto Corsini, or the Port of Ravenna. Here
the word Corsibonne is a play on the word Carboneri, the Italian
nationalist movement. The lady of the second line is the Catholic
church, and he who pillages her, is Garibaldi.
And hidden under the rocks, waiting to greet him upon his arrival, are
the Austrian and Papal troops. Garibaldi landed here with 90 men, and almost
all of them were captured by the soldiers. I have been unable to determine
if the exact number was 70, but it would seem most likely.
I have also been unable to determine who the Papal Legate was, who governed
Ravenna at this time, but Nostradamus says he was from Lisbon. DI PIETRO,
Camillo (1806-1884)?
Note that in the numbering of this quatrain 9-54 we are given two digits
of the year 1849 in which this event happened.
In the next quatrain Nostradamus sees Garibaldi carrying his sick and pregnant wife Anita through the swamps and having to lay her down when she died. He sees Garibaldi's 7 month struggle (to the day) for Italian nationalism, and he sees the albanois (from the word Alba, or founders of Rome - i.e. Italian nationalists) cutting down the Spaniards in a battle. But he also sees them loosing in the long run because there was a delay in giving battle which was what led to their defeat.
8-94
Before the lake where the most dear one is put down
For seven months, and his army routed
Spaniards will be destroyed by those of Albanois
Loss through delay in giving battle.
Devant
le lac ou plus cher fut getté
De sept mois, & son host desconfit
Seront Hispans par Albanois gastez
Par delai perte en donnant le conflict.

Garibaldi and his wife Anita 1849
This
yet again, another incredible quatrain with three digits of the year 1849
given in the numbering of it, 8-94!
The Albanois, Garibaldi and his little band of men numbering around 528
first left from Ravenna on February 3, 1849. They set off with high hopes
to liberate Rome, and indeed, they did do that. Unfortunately the victory
did not last for long, and they were driven out by the French. They ended
up back in Ravenna on August 3, 1849, seven months to the day, since
they had first left there!
The last two lines are also true, in the course of that seven months, Garibaldi
and his men did indeed destroy many Spaniards. But as Nostradamus could
see, his biggist military mistake, was his failure to follow up on his
victory at Rome on April 30, 1849. He defeated the French forces in a bloody
rout, but instead of pursuing them and destroying them, he allowed them
to escape, where they regrouped, and came back to defeat him a short while
later.
It is the last line of this quatrain which is so poignant. The dear
one who is put down, here was Garibaldi’s pregnant wife Anita, who
was traveling with them. Pregnant and sick, she died on August 8,
1849 in the arms of her husband at Guiccioli di Mandriole, near Ravenna.
2-71 The Exiles will come into Sicily
To deliver them from the foreigner’s hunger
At daybreak the Celts will fail them
Life remains by reason: the King joins.
Les
exilez en Sicile viendront,
Pour deliure de faim la gent estrange:
Au point du iour les Celtes luy faudront
La vie demeure à raison: Roy se range.
King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy
This
quatrain tells us of Garibaldi’s trip to Sicily, on May 11, 1860 with his
1089 volunteers, hoping to free them from the foreigner’s (Austrian)
hunger. But, as the prophet promises them in the 2nd line, the Celts, or
the French will back track on their support, and betray their cause.
The third line says that the Italian revolution will remain alive, because
it will have been joined by King Victor Emanuel of Savoy, and it will
be under his umbrella, that Italy will at last be united. Note in the numbering
of this quatrain 2-71, we are given two digits of the date 1871, when this
ideal was finally realized, with the incorporation of the City of Rome
into the new united Italian republic in June of 1871.
2-32
Milk, frog’s blood prepared in Dalmatia
Conflict given, a plague near Capua
A great cry will sound all throughout Hungary
Then a monster will be seen near and within Ravenna.
The
key to this quatrain lies in the third line, and the cry throughout all
Hungary. He is talking about the Hungarian revolution in 1849. In 1848,
the Emperor Ferdinand abdicated to his nephew Franz Joseph, and the other
half of the duel empire, Hungary, refused to accept this as legal. In April
of 1848, Hungary declared itself an independent country, and Austria brought
in Russian troops to crush the revolt in June of 1849. A few months later
in August, the Hungarians were subdued.
This renewed tyranny by Austria in Italy too, would set the stage for yet
another struggle a short while later, when France would become involved
in the Crimean war. This is what the prophet means by the first line. The
frog’s blood is being prepared in Dalmatia - the Frogs being the French.
Meanwhile,
directly across the Adriatic sea from Hungary, those of Italy were also
fighting for their independence from Austria. The monster who is born near
and within Ravenna, is describing Garibaldi, who left from Ravenna on February
3, 1849.
The plague that the prophet sees in the second line would be the cholera
which ravaged the country in 1849. At the siege of Venice, the cholera
killed more people than the Austrians did. In one week in 1849, 1,500 people
died from it, which was 600 more than were killed in the fighting. Ultimately,
the proud republic caved in and surrendered to the Austrians.
5-88
Through a frightful flood upon the sand
A marine monster from other seas found
Near the place will be made a refuge
Holding Savona the slave of Turin
In this quatrain as well, the mention of the sea monster refers to Garibaldi, who came from other seas - that is, he came from the Western side of Italy and the Mediteranean Sea near Genoa which is opposite to Ravenna on the Adriatic sea. The key to this quatrain lies in the last line, since Savona was part of the Papal states, and Turin was the captital of Peidmont and the Savoyards. Note that in the numbering of this quatrain 5-88 we are given two digits of the date 1858 in which Napoleon III agreed to join with the King of Savoy.
Cavour
7-20 Ambassadors of the Tuscan tongue
In April and May will pass the Alps and the sea
He of the calf will deliver the oration
About not wanting the Gallic way of life wiped out.
Ambassadeurs de la Toscane langue,
Avril & Mai Alpes & mer passer:
Celui de veay exposera l'harangue,
Vie Gauloise ne venant effacer.
The
Congress of Paris met in April and May of 1856 in Paris France. It’s purpose,
was to settle the terms of the peace with a defeated Russia after the end
of the Crimean war.
Piedmont’s ambassador Cavour was present at this conference, because his
King had been very crafty in sending a small force of Peidmontese to aid
the allies in the Crimean war. This ensured him at the very least, a place
at the table in the peace talks. Nostradamus calls him he of the calf,
because he was the envoy of Turin, and Torino means literally city of
the bull. It was called Augusta Taurinorum by the Romans, and Cavour
is the offspring of this city, or the calf.
But Cavour had a hidden agenda for this conference. He was determined to
raise the question of Italian independence yet again. What better place
could he have chosen, than a peace conference, with all the major monarchs
of Europe in attendance?
Italy had been struggling now for decades, and although crushed and defeated
many times over, they had never given up the hope that one day they would
be free. They still saw their best chance for fulfillment of that dream
lay with Emperor Napoleon III of France.
If Cavour’s begging and pleading for the Gallic way of life - i.e.
Liberty and equality for all it’s citizens would not work, then he had
also brought along a little something which would!
Countess Castiglione
in 1857
Her
name was the Countess Castiglione and she was the most beautiful woman
in all of Italy. Her orders were to seduce Napoleon, and bring him around
to the idea of supporting the Italian nationalist cause. How much success
she had, is difficult to prove, but whatever it was, the results were not
immediately visible. It took something much more serious to get Napoleon’s
attention - an attempted assassination upon his life.
The next quatrain is a most incredible one. It was written for Pope Pius
IX and the Prince Imperial,
son of Napoleon III Prince Imperial, born March 16, 1856
Pius IX GIOVANNI MARIA MASTAI-FERRETTI
10-8
With forefinger and thumb he will moisten the forehead
The Count of Senigallia, to his own son
The Venus through several in short order
Three in seven days wounded dead.
Index & poulse parfondera le front,
De Senegalia le Conte à son fils propre,
La Myrnamee par plusieurs de prin front,
Trois dans sept iours blessés mort.
This
quatrain is talking about the baptism of the Prince Imperial, son of Napoleon
III, which took place on June 15, 1856. This son was baptised by his
own Godfather, as Nostradamus says in the second line of the quatrain.
His God father was Pope Pius IX, who baptised the boy personally.
As if this is not enough, Nostradamus goes on to tell us the name of the
Pope - Pius IX was the son of the Count of Mastai Ferrett of Senigallia!
He was Born in the Mastai Palace in Senigallia on May 13, 1792 the son
of Gerolamo of the Counts Mastai Ferretti, and Caterina Solazzi.
Eugenie Marie de Montijo
The Venus would probably by the Empress Eugenie,
Napoleon’s wife who provided the Napoleonic empire with an heir. I would
think that the 3 who are wounded by this would be the three members of
the French monarchy whose hopes to reclaim the throne of France would be
dashed at this news. Particularly since Pope Pius IX gave Napoleon III
much credibility when he himself traveled to France to baptize the heir
personally. The three members of the French royalty who were left out in
the cold by this, would be the deposed Bourbon King Charles IX who abdicated
to his grandson the Count of Chambord, and the Duke of Orleans, Louis Phillipe,
who had been proclaimed King of the French. Note in the
numbering of this quatrain 10-8, we are given two digits of the year 1856
on which the event happened.
The Paris Opera
4-73
The great nephew by force will test
The treaty made by the pusillanimous heart
The Duke will try Ferrara and Asti
When the pantomime will take place in the evening.
Le nepueu grand par force prouuera
Le pache fait du coeur pusillanime:
Ferrare & Ast le Duc esprouuera,
Par lors qu'au soir sera le pantomime
This
concerns the assassination attempt made on the great nephew Napoleon III.
As he was leaving the opera on the night of January 14, 1858, a bomb exploded
under his carriage. As Nostradamus can clearly see - this one event would
forever change Italy’s role on the world stage.
The assassin was a man named Orsini, who was an Italian nationalist from
Romagnol. He was angry at Napoleon III because he had betrayed the Italians
after promising to help them with their independence. Eight bystanders
were killed and 148 received wounds, but neither Napoleon or Eugenie his
wife were seriously hurt.
However, after this, Napoleon started to take Italy’s clamour for independence
much more seriously, as can be seen in the next quatrains.
The next quatrain dated for the 19th century concerns Napoleon III, in the year 1856.
1-56 You will see great
changes made, soon and late
Extreme horrors and
vengeances
Because as the Moon
is conducted by her angel
The Sun is approaching
it’s inclinations
This
quatrain concerns the years 1856 to 1858. The King maker Saturn entered
the sign of Cancer and the Moon on May 30, 1856. However, as it began to
approach the sign of the Lion in Leo in June of 1858, great changes were
secretly stirring in Europe.
On January 14, 1858, there was an assassination attempt on Napoleon III.
Although he escaped with his life, the attempt had it’s desired effect
- Napoleon decided at long last, to join the Italians in their fight for
freedom, and to goad Austria into making war.
July 14, 1858 Saturn moves into sign of Leo and the Sun
On
July 14, 1858, Saturn moved into the sign of Leo the Lion. On July 20,
1858, Napoleon III met Cavour of Italy in a secret meeting at Plombieres
France. It was here that they secretly plotted to start a war with Austria,
and shortly afterwards, began the bloody fight for Italian independence.
Note that in the numbering of this quatrain 1-56, we are given three digits
of the date 1856, in which these events began to unfold.
Princess
Clothilde “Plon Plon”
8-8
Near Focia, enclosed within some tuns
Chivasso will plot for the eagle
The elected one driven out, he and his people shut up,
Within Turin, rape, the bride led away.
Pres
de Linterne dans de tonnes fermez,
Chivaz fera poir l'aigle la menee,
L'esleu cassé lui ses gens enfermez,
Dedans Turin rapt espouse emmenee.
This
concerns again, the plot for Italian freedom. Focia is near Naples, and
Chivasso is near Turin, in other words, the Savoyards of Turin will plot
for the eagle of freedom against the Bourbons of Naples.
Giuseppe Garibaldi was born at Nice on July 4, 1807, but his family was
pure Italian, having come from Chiavari beyond Genoa about
thirty years before he was born – obviously Nostradamus is word playing
here as well with the word Chivasso. The word tuns
in the first line is a reference to cargo on a boat - most of Garibaldi’s
plotting was done on board a boat, right from the beginning, when he first
sailed for Sicily.
The third line tells us that in the end, Garibaldi who is the elected one
here, will be driven out, when the Savoyards make a secret deal with France,
and all of Chivasso’s plots come to naught.. To seal this dirty deal, the
French Emperor’s cousin Plon Plon was to be married to the Savoyard princess
Clothilde daughter of Victor Emmanuel of Savoy and Adelaide de Habsburg.
This marriage took place on January 30, 1859. It could not have been more
of a mismatch! The girl was 15 years old, and a devout Catholic. Her husband
was a middle age agnostic playboy.
But there was more dirty dealing yet to come. Napoleon III ended up by
betraying his Savoyard ally and making peace with Austria on his own terms,
not even bothering to consult the Savoyards. Napoleon III got what he wanted,
the city of Nice, and the bride as well. The Savoyards got nothing in the
deal except betrayal, the loss of their territory, and most of all, the
loss of their princess. This is why Nostradamus says their will be a rape
within Turin, and the bride will be led away.
9-26
Nice will leave under the bitter letters
The great cloak will bestow a gift not his own
Near Voltri at the walls of green capers
After Plombin the wind will blow in earnest.
Nice sortie sur nom des lettres aspres,
La grande cappe fera present non sien:
Proche de vultry aux murs de vertes capres,
Apres plombin le vent à bon essien.
Napoleon III and Victor Emanuel May 14, 1859
In
this quatrain, the word Plombin is a play on the city of Plombiers
in France, and also a play on Plon Plon, the name of Napoleon’s
nephew. It was in this city on July 20, 1858, that the highly secretive
arrangement was made between Napoleon III and the ambassador, Cavour of
Savoy.
The plan was made to goad Austria into declaring war, but to make it appear
that Austria was the aggressor in the case, and not France or Savoy. When
the Austrians were driven out of Italy, then Napoleon III and the King
of Savoy who is the great cloak here, would divide the spoils. It
was all planned down to the smallest of details. France would provide 200,000
men, and Savoy would provide 100,000.
There was to be one catch - in return for Napoleon’s help, he was to receive
part of the Savoyard heartland, Savoy and Nice. This is what the prophet
means by Nice leaving in the first line. The deal was cemented by the marriage
of the Savoyard Princess and the nephew of Napoleon. Nostradamus says that
the Savoyard heartland is not something this King has the right to dispose
of in this shameful manner.
Voltri of the third line refers to the battle of Volturno which
took place on October 1, 1860 between the Savoyard forces and the Bourbon
forces. The Bourbons attacked from Capua, near a great viaduct known as
the Arches of the Valley. 1,500 of Garibaldi’s men were wounded that day,
and 300 killed. But by the end of the day, Garibaldi had penned the Bourbon
troops back in Capua - the walls of green capers are a reference
to the walls of Capua.
7-19
The fort of Nice will not be engaged
It will be conquered by shining metal
Which deed will be discussed for a long time
To the citizens, strange and fearful.
March 23 1860 Mars 29.56 degrees in Sagittarius
On March 24, 1860 in accordance with the secret undertaking
given at Plombieres, Savoy and Nice were officially ceded to France, in
consideration of her acceptance of the annexation of Tuscany and Emilia
to Piedmont. As Nostradamus says here, Nice was not overcome by military
actions, but by greed and gold, in a highly secret deal.
To Garibaldi, who had fought so hard for the nationalist cause, this news
came as a shock so profound, that for the rest of his life, he could never
bring himself to forgive the detestable man who was responsible for it.
He sent one of his officers to the King with instructions to ask if it
were true, and to answer him at once by telegraph, yes, or no.
The people of Nice and Savoy felt sold down the river as well, they had
not been told of it beforehand either, and had not even the remotest idea
such a thing would come to pass. The events which were to follow, would
lead to two more European wars, and as well, set the stage for the conflagration
of world war I in 1914.
5-42
Mars raised to it’s highest belfry
Will return Savoy to France
The Lombard people will cause a very great terror
To those of the Eagle included under the Balance.
Mars esleué en son plus haut befroy,
Fera retraire les Allobrox de France:
La gent Lombarde fera si grand effroy,
A ceux de l'Aigle comprins sous la Balance.
Saturn the King maker entered the sign of Libra The Balance on October 28, 1862 and stayed there until October 5, 1865. The Eagle he mentions is the imperial eagle of Austria, which is about to be chased from Italy by the French and the Lombard people. In the process, he says, Savoy will be given to France in return for their aid in driving Austria out of Italy.
7-15
Before the city of the Insubrian region (Milan)
The Siege will be laid for seven years
The very great King will enter therein
The city then free, it’s enemies out.
The
Insubrian region was Lombardy in Italy, and the chief city was Milan. Incredible
as it may sound, Milan indeed, was held in a siege like state for a period
of seven years!
On February 6, 1853 there was an uprising in that city against the Austrians,
and ten Austrians were killed. Austria reacted with violence, and 16 men
were shot or hanged in the city. No was allowed to leave it for a month.
After that, the city was held under strict control by Austrian forces.
Seven years later, on June 4, 1859, the French defeated the Austrians,
and drove them out of Lombardy. On June 8, 1859, the two Kings, King Victor
Emanuel of Savoy, and the Emperor Napoleon III made a triumphal state
entry into the city of Milan, where they were wildly cheered as being the
city’s liberators. Milan remained free from that day forward.
9-5
The third toe will seem like the first
To a new high monarch who comes from low to high
Like a tyrant, he will possess himself of Pisa and Lucca
To correct the faults of his predecessor.
Leopold II
Napoleon III
Pisa
and Lucca were ruled by the same man, Leopold II. He governed the same
way as did the rest of the despotic European monarchs of the day. “The
people? Who are they?” sneered his brother the Austrian emperor. “I
know only subjects.”
It is no wonder, that under these conditions, the Italian people were desperate
for freedom. As a young man, Napoleon III was involved with the revolutionist
activities in Italy as early as 1831. Then came his election as French
President, and the words Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, were heard once
again all the way to Italy.
Nostradamus here calls Napolon III the third toe, comparing him
to the first toe, his uncle Napoleon I. (Napoleon III took the designation
the third, out of respect for Napoleon’s son, who would have been Napoleon
II, had he lived) And like the first Napoleon, the third one was not born
of Royal blood either, he was elevated from low to high.
But through this third toe of the French, Leopold II the tyrant of Pisa
and Lucca was indeed sent packing. But his replacement only meant more
tyranny for the citizens, by the French and the Savoyards, instead of the
Bourbons and Austrians. The predecessor of the last line would be a reference
to the first Napoleon, who the third Napoleon of course was always trying
to improve upon.
Note in the numbering of this quatrain 9-5 we are given two digits of the
date 1859, the year in which Napoleon III became involved in the Italian
cause.
Victor Emanuel II of Savoy
9-80
The Duke will want to exterminate his followers
He will send the strongest ones to strange places
Through tyranny to ruin Pisa and Lucca
Then the barbarians will gather the grapes without vine.
On
March 31, 1854 Britain and France declared war on Russia, and allied themselves
with the Turks against her. Nostradamus must certainly have raised an eyebrow,
seeing France allied with the barbarians, her ancient enemies!
The Duke of the first line who wants to exterminate his followers, is the
Victor Emmanuel II Duke of Savoy - he was so anxious to ingratiate himself
with the French, that he joined them, and declared war on Russia January
26, 1855 as well. In the spring of 1855, 18,000 Peidmontese troops left
for the debacle of the Crimean war. The tyranny mentioned in the third
line refers to the same set of circumstances as can be found in the previous
quatrain 9-5.
The last line says that the barbarians will benefit from their war
with Russia, without having to do any of the real work. This was true,
since allied Europe did most of the fighting for them - and Russia was
defeated.
6-16
That which will be carried off by the young hawk
By the Normans of France and Picardy
The black ones of the temple of the black forest place
Will make an inn and fire of Lombardy.
The
young hawk in the first line is Napoleon III, and what is carried off is
the ideals of the French revolution into Italy. However, the 2nd line says
that the Catholic power base of the Holy Roman emperor will fight back,
and great battles will be fought on the plains of Lombardy. However, in
the end, the Italians won their freedom, and on February 18, 1861, Victor
Emanuel of Savoy was formally given the title of King of Italy. Except
for Rome and Venice, Italy was now free and independent nation for the
first time in centuries.
Note that in this quatrain Nostradamus again makes a point of mentioning
Normandy and Picardy especially in connection with Napoleon III. Note that
in the numbering of this quatrain 6-16, we are given two digits of the
date 1861.
Napoleon III ‘s residence Le Chateau de Pierrefonds in Picardy
The next quatrain dated for the 19th century also concerns Napoleon III in the year 1865.
Napoleon III
5-61 The child of
the great one not by his birth
He will subjugate
the high Apennine mountains
He will cause all
those of Libra to tremble
From the Pyrenees
to Mont Cenis
The
child
of the great one not by birth, is referring to Napoleon III, who was
the nephew, not the child, of the first Napoleon. Mont Cenis is in Savoy,
and it is one of the passes from Italy into France. The Pyrenees mark the
border between France and Spain. The King maker Saturn entered the sign
of Libra on October 28, 1862, and stayed there until October 5, 1865. It
was during these years, that Napoleon III was involved in the fight for
Italian independence.
Note that in the numbering of this quatrain 5-61, we are given three
digits of the date 1865, in which these events unfolded.
